In the fifth series of the Microbiome Matters podcast, we talk to experts Prof. Mike Gleeson, performance nutritionist Mhairi Keil, Dr James Morehen and performance chef Mike Bache about gut health and nutrition in athletes. Our podcasters are all experts in their fields and share with us their explanation of how to recognise conditions and their suggestions for management.

Episode 1: Performance Nutrition and Gut Health

In episode 1, we are joined by Mhairi Keil, a Senior Performance Nutritionist with the English Institute of Sport (EIS) and currently the Lead Nutritionist for British Gymnastics and GB Snow Sports. Today she’ll be chatting with us about her role at EIS, key nutritional considerations in elite athlete groups and strategies to support immune and gut health in athletes.

Episode 2: Immune Function and Gut Health in Athletes

In episode 2, we are joined by Professor Mike Gleeson, Emeritus Professor of Exercise Biochemistry in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University. Prof Gleeson shares current research around how factors like exercise intensity, nutrition and stress affect immune function and gut health in athletes.

Episode 3: Supplements in Sports Nutrition

In episode 3, we are joined by Dr James Morehen, a Performance Nutritionist registered with the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register who currently works with professional elite level athletes and global organisations. In this episode, he shares his expertise on supplements and their usage to support nutrition and gut health in athletes.

Episode 4: Creating Gut-Friendly Meals for Athletes

In episode 4, we are joined by Michael Bache, a classically trained chef with 20-years’ experience working in professional kitchens ranging from Michelin Starred hotels and fine dining restaurants to elite rugby clubs and international rugby camps. He shares with us his learnings as a Performance Chef and how he woks with nutritionists and dietitians to create delicious, nutritious and gut-friendly meals to fuel professional athletes.

Bonus Episode: Myth Busting with Mhairi Keil

In this bonus episode, we are back with performance nutritionist Mhairi Keil from the English Institute of Sport. Mhairi helps us bust some common nutrition myths such as ‘Collagen supplements can prevent or repair leaky gut’ and ‘If you experience gut symptoms while exercising, you have a food intolerance’ with the help of scientific evidence and her practical expertise within the field.
