Dietary Influences on the Gut Microbiota

In the second series of the Microbiome Matters podcast, we are joined by four experts who discuss dietary influences on the gut microbiota including: dietary patterns and lifestyle factors, probiotics and fermented food, dietary fibre and prebiotics, and emerging dietary components such as polyphenols, emulsifiers and personalised nutrition. Our podcasters are all experts in their fields and share with us their explanation of how to recognise conditions and their suggestions for management.

Episode 1: Dietary Patterns and Lifestyle Factors

In episode 1, we are joined by Prof. Paul O’Toole, who is a Professor of Microbial Genomics at University College Cork in Ireland. His main research area is the gut microbiome in humans, where he has participated in several projects that examine the composition and function of the gut microbiota, its interaction with habitual diet, and its relationship to health, and ageing. He co-ordinated the ELDERMET study, a project that established diet-microbiota health interactions in the elderly. In this episode, Prof. Paul O’Toole shares how dietary patterns and lifestyle factors may impact the gut microbiota and health.

Episode 2: Probiotics and Fermented Food

In episode 2, we are joined by Prof. Colin Hill, who is a Professor of Microbial Food Safety at University College Cork in Ireland. He is also a founding Principal Investigator in the APC Microbiome Institute, a multidisciplinary research centre focusing on the role of gut microbiota in health and disease. In this episode here he shares what probiotics and fermented foods are, how they differ, and their impact on the gut microbiota and health.

Episode 3: Dietary Fibre and Prebiotics

In episode 3, we are joined by Dr Bridgette Wilson, who is a Research and Clinical Dietitian at Kings College London and City Dietitians. She completed an award-winning PhD on the Low FODMAP diet and prebiotics in irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative Colitis. Following her PhD, Dr Wilson continues to conduct research into fibre interventions in functional gut disorders, and is working on developing a nutrition screening tool and national guidelines for the dietary management of inflammatory bowel disease. In this episode, Dr Bridgette Wilson shares what dietary fibre and prebiotics are, how they differ, and their impact on the gut microbiota and health.

Episode 4: Emerging Dietary Components and their Impact on the Gut Microbiota

In episode 4, we are join by Prof. Tim Spector who is a Professor of Genetic Epidemiology and Director of the TwinsUK Registry at Kings College in London. His current work focuses on the microbiome and has collaborated with experts around the world to conduct the largest nutritional study of its kind, the PREDICT study, in associated with healthcare science company ZOE. In this episode, Prof. Tim Spector shares the latest insights into emerging dietary components such as personalised nutrition and polyphenols, and their impact on the gut microbiota and health.
