Does the gut microbiota have any influence on disease?

The clue is in the name, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) destroys or impairs the immune system. So, as the majority of the immune system is located in the gut (gut associated lymphoid tissue), how does HIV infection affect the commensal bacteria there (or vice versa), and could there be a benefit in interventions that modulate the gut microbiota.
